Will the impact of the "DART" spacecraft lead to a meteor shower on Earth within 30 days of the collision?
Market Rules
One of NASA's upcoming space missions - the DART - intends to launch a spacecraft towards the asteroid Didymos in 2021. The spacecraft is expected to arrive at its destination in September of 2022, aiming at hitting the moon surrounding the asteroid and displace its orbit. The technique is expected to be effective in deflecting asteroids that threaten the Earth in the future.
It is expected that the majority of debris that results from the collision does not reach Earth. However, depending on the structure of the asteroid and the angle of impact, some pieces might reach Earth within 15 to 30 days of the impact. That could be important not only to learn more about the composition of the asteroid itself but also to other explosion tests to defend our planet.
If within 30 days of the collision between DART's spacecraft and asteroid Didymos' moon, part of the debris reaches Earth in a sufficient amount to become what NASA considers a meteor shower, this question will be resolved as "Yes". Futuur will rely on statements by NASA to resolve this market.
