Will the Chinese yuan surpass the Japanese yen as a global payment currency at any point in 2022?

Market Rules

Some analysts regard the development and deployment of the Chinese central bank digital currency (CBDC) as a tactic to strengthen the Chinese RMB’s role as a serious competitor to the monetary hegemony of the US dollar in international trade and investment.

Despite the importance of the RMB, there are still important regulatory and practical challenges for the currency to topple the US dollar, the Euro, the British pound, or the Japanese yen as the most relevant global payments currency.

If by December 31, 2022, the total amount traded worldwide in Chinese yuan (RMB) in any month exceeds the global trade in Japanese yen for that same month, this market will resolve to “Yes”.

This market will be resolved based on the monthly releases of SWIFT’s RMB Tracker.
