Will Covid-19 become the main cause of death in China in 2020?

Market Rules

On March 11th, the World Health Organization declared that the epidemic caused by the new coronavirus (Sars-Cov-2) - the cause of COVID-19 - became a pandemic, reaching all continents and infecting hundreds of thousands of people. In China alone, the virus had infected 81,496 and killed 3,153 people (numbers from March 23rd, 2020).

A study from 2019 showed that the leading cause of death among Chinese people was stroke (bit.ly/3bjWE3R), killing close to 0.15% of the Chinese population each year (roughly 2 million people at the time the study took place).

If the number of people who die from COVID-19 in China in 2020 is higher than 2,000,000 people, this question will be resolved as "Yes".

This question will be resolved based on the official statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO). If by January 5th, 2021, the WHO does not commit to a definitive number of deaths caused by Covid-19, Futuur will reserve itself the right to use data from another credible source that does provide an official death count - such as the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at John Hopkins University (https://gisanddata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboard/index.html#/bda7594740fd40299423467b48e9ecf6) - to resolve this question.
