Researchers at Washington State University and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory are developing a sodium-ion battery that might become more efficient than lithium batteries. If the developed device can store as much energy as lithium batteries, it could be the end of the lithium era, because sodium is more economically viable, since it is more abundant and cheaper.

The main challenge for sodium batteries is recharging, given that sodium tends to form inactive crystals that make the battery inefficient. According to the team of researchers, however, their new system would allow continuous charging, prevent the accumulation of such crystals, and make them able to maintain more than 80% of their charge even after 1,000 cycles are completed.
