Will Google launch a modular cell phone by the end of 2021?
Market Rules
Google's Project Ara was intended to consist of hardware modules providing common smartphone parts (such as processors, displays, batteries, and cameras), as well as modules providing more specialized components, and "frames" to which these modules were to be attached. This design would allow for less waste, build flexibility, easier repairs; not to mention endless opportunities to accessorize your device. Nonetheless, Google canceled the project in 2016.
As of 2020, however, 3 models of somewhat modular cell phones from other companies have already been launched: the Doogee S90, the Motorola Moto Z2, and the Fairphone. In addition to that, rumors of a Google modular phone have risen after the company filed a patent for a system with replaceable parts, signaling Google might not be done with modular cell phones just yet.
If by the end of 2021 Google announces the launch of a modular cell phone, this market will be resolved as "Yes".
