Will Coal-fired electricity be increased in 2021?
Market Rules
The electrical energy generated from thermoelectric plants fueled by coal is the most polluting form of electricity generation and one of the leading causes of climate change. China and India are two major countries that rely a lot on coal-fired electricity, and they top the list of most polluted cities in the world.
Several actions have been taken to reduced coal usage, and the economic recession caused by the Covid-19 pandemic also contributed to that. But experts warn that the world's use of coal before the pandemic was still far too high to meet the climate goals of the Paris agreement, and worry that the economic recovery could come with even higher levels of coal usage than before.
If the coal-fired electricity use registered worldwide in 2021 is higher than in 2020, this market will be resolved as "Yes".
Futuur will resolve this market based on data from credible institutions such as (but not restricted to) the IEA (the International Energy Agency), the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air, and the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis. </p>
