Californian company Second Sight is developing an implant called Orion to project artificial vision into the brains of blind patients.
The same company already has another device, called Argus II, which is already for sale in the US market.
The Orion device consists of a chip placed in the patient's brain. When the chip is activated, the camera captures images which the processing unit then converts to electrical pulses, generating images in the patient's brain. By December 2019, however, the generated images were still quite rudimentary, with patients not being able to see light colors, shapes, and edges. Second Sight has announced it intends to improve the device to provide a clearer view and make it available for sale.
If by December 31st, 2027, the Orion device is approved for sale in the US market, this market will resolve to "Yes".
