Will the incidence of locally-acquired cases of Dengue fever drop in Piracicaba/SP/Brazil after the release of genetically modified mosquitoes?
Market Rules
Aedes aegypti, the mosquito that transmits Dengue fever, Zika, Chikungunya, and Yellow fever, is a constant nightmare for Brazilians. Every year the country suffers from Dengue outbreaks and cases of other diseases transmitted by it.
In face of that, Oxitec, a British company that also operates in Brazil, received authorization from the Brazilian National Technical Commission on Biosafety to release genetically modified mosquitoes in the country. The modified strain intends to ultimately eradicate the mosquito population by blocking the development of female mosquitoes.
The Oxitec mosquitoes will most likely be released in Piracicaba, a city in the state of São Paulo, where the company already has some ongoing projects. If they are indeed released by August of 2021, and, by the end of two years after the release of the modified mosquitoes, Piracicaba registers a decrease or absence of locally-acquired Dengue Fever, this market will be resolved as "Yes".
