Nipah virus declared a public health emergency by the WHO in 2026?
Market Rules
Cases and outbreaks of the Nipah virus, a zoonotic disease with a high fatality rate, have been periodically reported in parts of South and Southeast Asia. Given concerns about its potential for severe outcomes and cross-border spread, there is ongoing attention to how the international health community may respond if the situation escalates.
The World Health Organization (WHO) may declare a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) when facing an “extraordinary event that constitutes a public health risk to other countries through the international spread of disease and potentially requires a coordinated international response.”
If, at any point through December 31, 2026, the WHO declares that the spread of the Nipah virus constitutes a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, this market will resolve to “Yes”. Otherwise, this market will resolve to “No”.
