Researchers at the National Center for Cardiovascular Diseases in Beijing (China) have developed a new algorithm that uses artificial intelligence to detect heart diseases just by analyzing photos of a patient's face. The algorithm looks for facial features such as wrinkles, blemishes, and color changes in the cornea.

In tests with more than 1,000 patients from nine Chinese hospitals, the algorithm correctly detected the presence of heart disease in 80% of cases. Nonetheless, it still needs refinement to reduce the high rate of false positives.
