The limitations of testing are a problem that needs to be overcome for better control of the COVID-19. With that in mind, researchers at the University of Science and Technology of China developed a breathalyzer test, which uses breath samples to detect the presence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
The new blow test, which is faster and cheaper than the current gold standard test (RT-PCR), uses a nanoparticle sensor to detect the virus. Microorganisms that infect our cells emit volatile compounds that react with nanoparticles, producing a specific pattern of signals that are picked up by a sensor that uses machine learning to detect the presence of SARS-COV-2.
By September 2020, the device had reached 76% accuracy in distinguishing patients with COVID-19 from healthy people. However, to enter the market, the test needs to be validated on a larger number of patients.
If by the end of July 2021 the breathalyzer test developed by the University of Science and Technology of China reaches a 90% effectivity rate in detecting cases of Covid-19, this market will be resolved as "yes".
