Will Ireland’s DPC ban Ray-Ban Stories glasses’ sales by the end of 2022?
Market Rules
The "Ray-Ban Stories" sunglasses were developed in partnership with Facebook and feature technological functions in its rim. such as cameras, voice-activated recording, and connectivity to a digital photo and video sharing platform.
European privacy and data regulators, however, have raised concerns with the product. The Data Protection Commission (DPC) of Ireland, for example, asked Facebook to provide evidence that the glasses provide a clear indication when image recording is in place. The Irish agency was not the only one in Europe to question features of the product, but its regulatory role over Facebook is fundamental since the company’s European base is located in Ireland.
If by December 31, 2022, the DPC states that the sales of the Ray-Ban Stories sunglasses must be interrupted, this market will be resolved as “Yes”. Eventual determinations of either removal or modification of one or more functions of the Ray-Ban Stories sunglasses so that they can be commercialized in Ireland will also be sufficient for this market to be resolved as “Yes”.
