Security Council non-permanent members expansion before the next UN General Assembly?
Market Rules
The US formally defended the reform of the United Nations’ Security Council in 2022 to include non-permanent seats and permanent seats for countries from Africa and Latin America. The need for reform is sustained by China and other permanent members of the Council but there was still no common ground for it at the time this market was opened.
In order to expand the Security Council, it is first necessary to arrive at an agreement to at least open the UN Charter for amendment. That happened only 5 times since 1945 and requires approval from two-thirds of the UN members as well as all of the 5 permanent members of the Security Council.
If, during the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, the UN Security Council’s membership gets expanded and gets at least one additional non-permanent member, this market will resolve to “Yes”.
