Scientists at the University of Alberta (Canada) have announced relevant progress in the treatment of diabetes, a disease where the body cannot control the levels of glucose (sugar) in the blood. The research team was able to reverse diabetes in mice using stem cell-based therapy, by turning cells from the mice's blood into insulin-producing cells.
If the therapy proves to be successful in humans, there would no longer be the need to wait for a pancreas donor or suffer the side effects of a transplant in the most severe cases of the disease. After all, if patients are using their own cells, there would be no risk of rejection nor the need for drugs to prevent rejection.
Before the team starts to carry out tests on human beings, however, it needs to meet its fundraising goal of $ 22 million US Dollars to continue the research.
