Will the intellectual property protection of Covid-19 vaccines be waived by WTO by the end of 2022?
Market Rules
Some countries in the World Trade Organization (WTO), led by South Africa and India, proposed the waiving of patents on vaccines against COVID-19. In May 2021, the United States announced support for the proposal. If approved, the act might increase the production of immunizers against SARS-CoV-2, especially in developing countries.
WTO resolutions must be made after consensus between the organization's members, which, was still a distant reality at the time this market was published (May 20210. Pharmaceutical companies and laboratories disagreed on the benefits of the intervention, arguing that the measure could discourage future research in the area of innovation aimed at new drugs and therapies. They also argued that the patent waive would not increase the supply of vaccines in the short term, because the technology for vaccines that use messenger RNA is new, complex, and expensive, and would hence hinder the ability of other researchers groups to learn and produce them in the short term.
If by the end of 2022 the World Trade Organization (WTO) determines that at least part of the vaccines against Covid-19 that are in circulation in the world shall have their patents waived, this market will resolve to "Yes".
