Gene therapy for partial vision recovery: approved by the NHS by 2025?

Researchers at the University of Newcastle (United Kingdom) developed a kind of gene therapy that gave back the ability to recognize pictures to three patients who had lost their sight. The new technique aims to restore visual function by injecting a harmless virus that was modified to carry genetic instructions for the production - inside the patient's eye - of a protein that responds to light. The procedure allowed visual information to be transmitted to the brain when the modified cells were exposed to light.
The achievement marks an important step for optogenetics. Although still experimental, the treatment may be approved for implementation in the UK National Health Service (NHS).
If the referred therapy or any similar kind of light stimulus-associated gene therapy for partial vision recovery is approved for implementation in the NHS by the end of 2025, this market will be resolved as “Yes”.
