Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act (CDA) of 1996 is a piece of Internet legislation, which provides immunity from legal liability for publishers from third-party content. The legislation separates hosts, republishers, providers, and other intermediaries of internet content from publishers and speakers.

Section 230 is a controversial topic since it has been the legal ground for the exemption of liability of big online platforms such as Facebook and Twitter from the spread of misinformation or ‘hateful’ content inside their communities of users. On the other hand, the Electronic Frontier Foundation describes it as “one of the most valuable tools for protecting freedom of expression and innovation on the Internet”.
