The 6th climate report from the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network (GCRMN) was published in October 2021 and showed a profound increase in the death of coral reefs worldwide due to climate change. The rise in temperature and acidity of the sea has led to the massive death of coral reefs, which are the basis of the food chain of many important species, playing a fundamental role in marine ecosystems.

The report also underscores the need to combat the growth of algae that damage corals and unbalance the ecosystem. Global algae coverage in coral reefs has been increasing since 2011 and peaked in 2018 at 19.30%, having shown a small decline in 2019 (19.03%).

If the 7th report from GCRMN indicates that the algae coverage in coral reefs has increased to more than 19.03%, this prediction will be resolved as “Yes”.

The 7th report from GCRMN is expected to be released in 2023.
